Grey

Update March 2021: Unfortunately, both Wraith and Purple had to be euthanized by our veterinarian due to persistent and worsening respiratory disease, leaving Grey the sole survivor from this group. Even so, Grey himself has severe and chronic respiratory disease and requires medication twice a day. His monthly medical bill is about $30. If you would like to help support the Rescue and our continued care of Grey, please visit our Donate Page. This trio of boys came from a previous owne...

Gordon

Sweet and independant Gordon has the honor of being the oldest rat currently living at the Rescue. He was surrendered along with 10 other rats at the age of 1-1.5 years old in 2019, and has never been able to get completely healthy. To this day, Gordon requires twice daily doxycycline and prednisone to keep his respiratory infection under control. Good thing is, Gordon LOVES cooked food. He loves rice, pasta, baby food, veggie purees and all sort of human junk food, so getting him to take ...

Lexie & Jackie

These tightly bonded girls were surrendered to the SPCA in Gatineau because their previous owner wanted to euthanize them after they got lice. Thankfully, the vet refused, and referred them to the SPCA. Due to their poor chances at the SPCA, these girls were transferred into the care of the Ottawa Pet Rat Rescue. After 6 months with the Rescue, the oldest girl, Blossom, unfortunately finally succumbed to her illness and with careful consideration and support from our vet, she was put to sleep...

Kepler & Leo

Brothers Kepler and Leo have been through a lot and they have the physical scars to prove it. These boys are an estimated 1 to 1.5 years old. Both Kepler and Leo are missing fingers and toes. Kepler is also missing about half of his tail and there is some heavy scaring on what's left of it. Leo has some scars on his tail, but managed to keep the whole thing (somehow!) and still has a few stubs for fingers which he uses to expertly hold things. They need a cage/enclosure that is nice and wi...

Emma Frost, Jean Grey & Storm

This mother-daughter trio is looking for a loving home where they will be able to stay together. Storm (right) was only 2 or 3 months old when she was dropped off extremely pregnant at a pound in Montreal. Thankfully, with the help of a few volunteers, we were able to make room for her and her 12 babies. Storm is the sweetest, friendliest girl you will ever meet, and her daughters, who have all already caught up to her in size are very similar. Do you have a special place in your heart ...

Imagine, tiny rat-sized puppies staring at you from behind a crate door: this is exactly Chip and Riley any time you walk by the cage and DON'T stop to say...

Shylock & Tolbot

Sweet, adorable brothers, Shylock and Tolbot are only 8 months old and still have so much growing to do, and so much love to give. These brothers are extremely curious and so full of energy. They may not want to cuddle now, but once they have grown up and learned to love their new family, they will hopefully become sweet squishy boys. For now, they would much rather run around, explore, and spend as much time out of their cage as possible. Shylock and Tolbot are looking for a home that can...

Peppa & Salt

Meet rambunctious and active sisters Peppa & Salt. These fun-loving girls are an estimated 4-5 months old and still have a ton of growing and learning to do. They were surrendered to the SPCA as their previous home says they didn't have enough time for them. These girls are extremely curious, friendly, and are just a little unsure about being picked up. Once they are out though, it's all about fun and games. They will crawl all over you and aren't shy at all! If you think you have the t...

Bubbles (spayed) & Blossom

These sisters are estimated to be about 1.5 years old. They were unfortunately dropped off at the SPCA in Gatineau as unwanted rats with very little information about where they came from and what their previous living conditions were like. Thankfully, regardless of their past, these two girls are friendly, curious and with just a little bit of socialization will definitely become absolute sweethearts. With their super soft fur, big dumbo ears and curious personalities, Buttercup & Bubble...

Desdemona & Beatrice

Meet Desdemona & Beatrice, two baby girls who were born in early October 2016. These two were born and kept in a tiny hamster cage, 8″x10″ wide along with 21 other rats until they were surrendered to the Rescue. At only 5 weeks old, they will soon be ready to find their forever homes. Right now, they are typical babies: sleeping, eating, pooping and bouncing around their cage like they have springs attached. The ideal home for these girls would be one with a big cage they can grow into, lo...

George, Franklin & Lucas

Meet George, Franklin & Lucas (left to right), three babies who were lucky to be saved and to meet each other. Lucas was born when a pet store sold his pregnant young mother as a pet. Since she was a baby herself, she only gave birth to 3 little ones and he was the only boy. The girl who purchased his mother decided she could not keep him and so brought him to the Rescue. Franklin and Lucas were going to become snake food, but after a series of fortunate and not-so-fortunate events, they end...

Archer & Cyril

These two lovely black and white boys were surrendered to us because of a very unfortunate financial situation meant that their human guardians could not afford to keep them anymore. They were truly well loved by their past mom after they were given to her by a family who had lost interest. These darlings have found a new forever home where they will be showered with just as much love and attention as their past parents lavished them with. One boy is still a little shy of hands, but the other is...

Mascouche Surrender

On July 25th, 2014, OPRATs was contacted about 22 rats at risk of being killed by a breeder in Mascouche, near Montreal, who had been reported by local authorities and was being ordered to stop all breeding. We had until July 27th to get those rats out, otherwise, they would be used as feeders. Now, with most of them safely in Ottawa, we have found out that the majority of the females are in fact, pregnant. With no vets in Ottawa who are willing to spay rats, we have been forced to move these...
